"We are now talking about ‘gutter running’. A transit lane. Streetcars have a dwell time, but with a bus the rear may stick out, blocking traffic. I propose high level loading only, which is fast.
"The line would start at North Station: Canal St. To Haymarket, Faneuil Hall, the Aquarium, the Boston Harbor Hotel, then South Station, then westbound on Essex St., connecting with the South Station Bus Terminal. Double-ended cars would be used, with a double crossover north of Haymarket so vehicles could be turned in case of congestion. These would be low-speed cars, up to 25 mph, so the system wouldn’t draw lots of power. Simple trolley wire. Keep it as old-trolley as possible. Simple. Single pole, with trolley wire used. The wire could be suspended from nearby buildings, minimizing the use of lineside poles. Gomaco could make cars resembling Type 5's. Fourteen cars would service the route. They would cost between $650,000 and $700,000 each. They could be air conditioned.
"APT can help by providing exposure. Or reacting to proposals. The concept is bubbling. If APT members are also members of kindred organizations, they can introduce Herb to them. The Artery people are talking about what to do with parcels of land in the corridor. They are not looking at public transportation. The powers that be are uncomfortable with the concept. But if we got someone like Jane Holtz Kay to write an article endorsing the concept, it could provide a springboard."
We’re still on target for roll-out of the publication on the date of the APT Annual Meeting.
Motion by Barry M. Steinberg, seconded by John Hostage, that we endorse and support Herbert Pence’s concept of "Streetcars Along the Artery Park", i.e. a North Station-South Station streetcar line. Approved.
Fred Moore has been appointed transportation delegate on the Town of Saugus ad hoc Committee for Land Use Planning and Analysis.
[Editor’s note: Subsequent to the April directors meeting, the schedule conflict was resolved, and the next scheduled meeting reverted to the regular day, 14 May 2003.]
