BOARD MEETING MINUTES, 13 NOVEMBER 2002, 6:10 P.M.
(approved 11 Dec. 2002)

Board members present: John Hostage, George Kelso, Romin Koebel, Carolyn Mieth, Fred Moore, Barry M. Steinberg

Guests: Madeleine Noland, Andy Rubel

  1. President's Report (Fred Moore)
  2. We attended the meeting of the Service Standards Technical Advisory Committee of the MBTA. Paul Shimek and Nigel Wilson are also members. Mid-route time points on the timetables were discussed. The means of measuring the passenger "crowding factor" on various vehicles was presented: The T has a different standard for each type of vehicle. Fred suggested a simple measure consisting of passengers per square foot of net floor space. Another topic was a waiver of elimination of service for lightly-used routes that are subject to review every couple of years.

  3. Car-Free (Andy Rubel)
  4. We have completed the remaining chapters of Car-Free in Boston. There is still some routine editing work to be done: maps, an index, table of contents and an introduction are in progress. By the middle of December, the complete drafts should be sent to the reviewers. From the time that the reviewers receive the drafts, I think the suspense date should be around a couple of weeks. Usability of the work is my primary concern.

Romin suggested Andy contact Robin S. Friedman of Boston University as a conduit for sale of the book.

The suggestion was made to use the APT web site for Car-Free updates, rather than the previous method of mailing out updates either individually or as part of newsletters.

  5. The Board minutes of August and October were approved.
  • The consensus of the meeting was that Vice President Koebel should look into APT's joining MoveMass 2000.
  • Motion by Fred Moore (seconded by Barry Steinberg) that APT adopt the Urban Ring Transit paper by Barry Steinberg as a component in the framework of advocacy endorsed by the Board. Passed.
  • The Web Site (Fred Moore)
  • We are in the information delivery business. The list serve issue should come up here—for contact information, links, current events, archival threads of information.

  • The meeting adjourned 7:57 p.m.
  • Respectfully submitted,

    BARRY M. STEINBERG

    Secretary
